Located 143 kms from Cuauhtemoc City (Mennonite community) and 247 kms to Chihuahua City (Chihuahua State capital), it is a strategic poit from where you can visit the different Tarahumana Canyons. It is part of the Bocoyna municipality, a county capital located 16 kms from Creel and very close to Sisoguichi, one of the Jesuit's missions founded in the 17th century.
Even though in the olden times the economy of Rochivo (original Tarahumara name of the town) depended on the sawmills, now the tourist industry and commerce are the most significant economic activities of the city.
In the main plaza, you will find a monument of Don Enrique C. Creel, the governor who gave his name to the town in 1907, the same year the railroad arrived - Kansas City-Mexico and Orient.
There is also a church in neogothic style and a sculpture of Jesus Christ in a nearby mountain. In Creel you can visit "la casa las artesianas" (handcraft house) and see the display of historical and cultural samples belonging to the Raramuri indians as well as a complete exhibition of beautiful items from the Paquime culture. Right here they sell a wide variety of traditional articles by the Tarahumana Indians like pots, carved wooden objects, and typical clothing items.
You can avail of guided tour services going to the region and practice eco-sports, rock climbing, rappelling, mountain biking, walking, and the canyon tours. |
